THE PREDICTION
This is a really tricky call in a first meeting between world number 39 Maxime Cressy and number 84 Stan Wawrinka for a number of reasons. Former world number three Wawrinka claimed his only Masters title on clay at the Monte-Carlo Open back in 2014 and he claimed one of his three Grand Slams at Roland-Garros a year later. Being one of only four players to win the French Open during Rafael Nadal’s reign has to count for something on clay but 25-year-old Cressy should enjoy the high altitude in Madrid as it adds an extra few miles per hour to his mammoth serve and forehand. However, the American takes a poor six-match losing streak into Madrid, which comes as a surprise considering he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner at the Montpellier Open just two months ago. 38-year-old Wawrinka has played well initially this season before running out of steam in the latter stages of tournaments and backing him to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid siding with anyone here.
