25-year-old Max Purcell set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 67th last week after an excellent season so far at Challenger level with six finals reached for a 3-3 record. The Aussie grabbed a strong clay result over Daniel Altmaier at the Houston Open last month but it is certainly his weakest surface, although fellow Aussie Jordan Thompson also prefers his tennis in the faster conditions. Former world number 43 Thompson recently beat Purcell to a Challenger title in Gwangju earlier this month and the 29-year-old has won two titles of his own at that level this season. Thompson is no stranger to a lengthy battle at a major, with sets going both ways in each of his last three appearances at Grand Slams. Thompson had the misfortune of facing Rafael Nadal in the first round here last season but he has lost each of his last three first round matches at Roland-Garros since a third round exit in 2019. Purcell is an unknown entity in Paris on his debut but back both players to win at least a set if you can or consider a one-off on this clash to see five sets.
