THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Matteo Berrettini finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here in 2021, taking the first set from the Serb before losing a competitive battle. The 27-year-old looked the next-best thing on grass to Djokovic that season and he won both Stuttgart and Queen’s last summer to suggest he could emulate his run before he contracted covid-19 on the eve of the tournament. The Italian has always struggled with various injuries but he has suffered an inordinate amount over the last 12 months to bring a concerning 7-7 record into Wimbledon to face the last man to beat him in world number 40 Lorenzo Sonego. 28-year-old Sonego conceded just three games to Berrettini at the Stuttgart Open two weeks ago to oust the defending champion and he is an excellent competitor in these conditions too, reaching the round of 16 here in 2021 before becoming Roger Federer’s last win on tour.
At his best, Berrettini would have too much power for his fellow Italian on this fastest surface but there is very little good news from his camp right now. Back Sonego to earn at least two sets and leave the victor up to chance.
