THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Thursday if former world number six Matteo Berrettini can continue in this encouraging upturn in form. The 26-year-old came back from a set down to beat Francisco Cerundolo on Wednesday, backing up an excellent straight-sets victory over Maxime Cressy in the first round, to claim back-to-back wins on tour for only the second time this season. However, Holger Rune was the player he faced at this stage of the Mexican Open last month after two wins when he was forced to retire injured in the second set and the Dane will be more of a handful on his favoured clay. The world number nine beat Dominic Thiem handily on Wednesday in his first match on clay this season and whilst 2023 has not started at the height of how he left last season he looks set to challenge everyone on the surface over the next two months. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after Berrettini won their first encounter at Indian Wells last season but Rune is in much better shape one year on whilst Berrettini’s form is more erratic than ever.
