THE PREDICTION

Former world number six Matteo Berrettini looked assured in a surprisingly one-sided straight-sets win over Ugo Humbert on Tuesday to get a strong foothold in at the US Open. The 27-year-old has endured an inordinate amount of injuries and setbacks over the past two seasons but a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month suggested he could be on the way back up after three impressive wins over top 40 players, including former US Open finalist Alexander Zverev. World number 73 Arthur Rinderknech also came through his opener with little fuss over the ailing Diego Schwartzman on Tuesday but the Frenchman has yet to beat a player ranked inside the top 40 in what has been a poor follow-up to his strong 2022. Heavy forehands on either side of the net should make for some interesting rallies but back Berrettini to reach the third round outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak for value but it is no given after the Italian’s fierce start.
