World number 32 Denis Shapovalov produced his customary five-set marathon win at a Grand Slam early this campaign, taking the first two sets and then the fifth over Brandon Nakashima on Monday. The 24-year-old improved his still poor 8-9 record for 2023 with the win but a 2-2 record on clay so far this year suggests he is improving after a ropy start, although this will be a tough test against a hungry young clay specialist in Matteo Arnaldi. The 22-year-old will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 95th after an impressive comeback over Daniel Elahi Galan on Sunday and recent victories on clay over Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman suggest he can put up a proper fight here. Shapovalov has never made it past the second round at Roland-Garros but the Canadian is one of the most unpredictable players on tour. Back Arnaldi to earn at least two sets and leave the victor up to chance, with this match a reasonable candidate for five sets.
