20-year-old Matilde Paoletti received a wildcard to make her Masters debut here on home clay at the Italian Open, setting a new career-high WTA world ranking of 294th in the process. The Italian won her first tour-level match in Parma last September before a creditable defeat to third seed Irina-Camelia Begu and she looks more capable than moist wildcards in Rome of doing something in the early stages. World number 94 Magdalena Frech will be a tough opponent, though, after sailing through qualifying this week. The Pole beat Jasmine Paolini at this stage of the Madrid Open before an impressive performance against Jessica Pegula eventually ended in a straight sets defeat. Backing Paoletti to earn at least a set could be the shrewd way to avoid a winner here but it is probably more sentimental than wise. Take Frech to do the same inside an accumulator or back the Pole to win outright on its own.
