THE PREDICTION
World number 83 Marton Fucsovics lost to Taylor Fritz for the second time this season to crash out of the Munich Open last week but the Hungarian has improved a lot on last season’s woeful form. The 31-year-old is a combative all-courter at his best but his only ATP title to date came on clay at the Geneva Open back in 2018 and the high-altitude in Madrid should enhance his powerful strokes. World number 85 Marco Cecchinato set a career-high ATP world ranking of 16th in 2019 after a huge run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros was eventually ended by runner-up Dominic Thiem and he claimed three ATP titles on his favoured clay during that golden period. The 30-year-old remains a threat on the surface to this day and he qualified well to make the main draw in Madrid but he has lost both of his previous matches here and Fucsovics leads their head-to-head 3-1. The pair are 1-1 on clay, though, to suggest that backing Fucsovics to earn at least a set is the suitably cautious move and to win outright the reasonable risk.
