THE PREDICTION
Former world number five Eugenie Bouchard came back from a set down to oust fellow qualifier Dayana Yastremska on Wednesday, backing up some recent encouraging wins on clay. The 29-year-old claimed her only WTA title on clay at the Nuremberg Cup, on clay, back in 2014 but she was a remarkable all-courter at her peak that season with runs to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Roland-Garros and the Wimbledon final before injuries all-but ended her ‘first’ career. 29-year-old Martina Trevisan comes into Madrid at a career-high WTA world ranking of 20th after making the semi-finals of Roland-Garros on her favoured clay last summer and she is certainly one of the more specialised clay-courters out there. The Italian was forced to retire from her first round match at the Stuttgart Open last week but it was probably a precautionary move ahead of the Masters events in Madrid and Rome. The conditions suit Trevisan best but Bouchard is and will always be a huge anomaly when she is able to stay fit. Take the Italian to win outright but leave this match out of an accumulator.
