22-year-old Alycia Parks should set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 48th after an excellent upset over Victoria Azarenka on Friday. The American claimed her career-best ranking win over Caroline Garcia back in February to win her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open but a run of poor form since made her three-set victory over qualifier Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova look a tough ask. World number 20 Martina Trevisan is one of the better clay-courters on tour but a recent run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open on a hardcourt was a big statement of intent ahead of the clay swing. The Italian beat Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets on Friday for a solid start to her Madrid campaign but this is no gimme against Parks, whose excellent serve is handed an extra boost in Madrid’s high altitude. Trevisan should be able to find a way through here but the upset feels very feasible too. Back Trevisan to earn at least a set or consider leaving the result alone altogether in lieu of at least one tiebreak in the match, with Parks seeing two already this week.
