World number two Aryna Sabalenka claimed the first Grand Slam title of her career at the Australian Open back in January, beating Elena Rybakina from a set down in her first major final. The 25-year-old is probably at her least effective on clay, and yet to reach the second round at Roland-Garros, but she won a second Madrid Masters title earlier this month at the hands of world number one Iga Swiatek to suggest she is in the mix for the title here nonetheless. Sabalenka can become world number one if she significantly betters Swiatek’s campaign in Paris but she is, realistically, one of a handful of players capable of stopping the Pole. This is no gimme, though, against 20-year-old up-and-comer Marta Kostyuk. The world number 39 claimed her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open back in March and the Ukrainian will be determined to produce her best level against Belarussia’s Sabalenka, with aggro and a frosty reception at the net guaranteed. Both players would prefer this clash take place on a hardcourt but at this moment in time in-form Sabalenka can be backed to shut out the noise to win in straight sets.
