THE PREDICTION

World number eight Marketa Vondrousova conceded just four games to Liudmila Samsonova on Wednesday to claim her first totally convincing win since her run to the quarter-finals of the US Open last summer. The 24-year-old stunned the field at Wimbledon to lift her maiden Grand Slam title but whilst she initially coped very well with the increased expectation in subsequent tournaments her game began to suffer from a debilitating shoulder issue that scuppered the rest fo 2023. If the Czech is on her way back to her summer form she should find a way through this intriguing clash with Sorana Cirstea but her opponent has been thoroughly impressive this week, coming back from a set down to oust Donna Vekic on Wednesday to back-up an excellent campaign.

The 33-year-old moved back up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st in the live rankings but she needs to win here to have any chance of finally breaking inside the top 20, 13 years on from almost doing so, and that extra motivation could be crucial here. Cirstea has won each of their last two matches to lead 2-1 in a very competitive head-to-head but Vondrousova has improved since their last meeting in Miami last year – albeit her current level is tough to discern. Back Cirstea to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: SORANA CIRSTEA TO WIN A SET
