THE PREDICTION
World number 80 Marketa Vondrousova should be considered a genuine title contender at the Madrid Open as a former Roland-Garros finalist with some of the most natural skills on this surface on tour. The 23-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 14th as a teenager after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty in Paris in 2019 but she is currently making her way back up the rankings after suffering a long injury lay-off last season. A straight-sets victory over Marina Bassols Ribera was a strong start on Wednesday and the Czech will feel a lot more at home in Madrid’s high altitude after coming through qualifying than 17th seed Magda Linette. 31-year-old Linette broke the top 20 on tour for the first time in her career this year after producing a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. After an understandable blip in form, the Pole has improved in recent tournaments to need the likes of Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys to oust her. A first meeting with Vondrousova could end up one of the matches of the round but the Czech has to be favoured in conditions that suit her better. Take Vondrousova to win outright with three sets about as likely as two.
