THE LOWDOWN
World number nine Marketa Vondrousova came back from a set down to oust an impressive Peyton Stearns on Monday, reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time. The 24-year-old produced an incredible run to the Wimbledon title in July, staying totally under the radar until she beat Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals, and her campaign so far in New York has gone much the same way. Vondrousova first burst onto the scene in 2019 as a shock runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros and she claimed silver medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
World number 17 Madison Keys is through to back-to-back Grand Slam quarter-finals for the first time since 2018, where she made the last eight at the Australian Open after finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens here in 2017. The 28-year-old’s ceiling is one of the highest on tour and she found it on Monday with an incredible display against Jessica Pegula, ousting the US number one 6-1 6-3 to suddenly look a contender in New York. Keys reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July before a one-sided defeat to Aryna Sabalenka but her level is decidedly higher here.
THE PREDICTION
Marketa Vondrousova looked hampered by a shoulder injury in her round of 16 clash with Peyton Stearns that throws her fitness into serious doubt for this quarter-final clash. A first meeting with Madison Keys could be a thriller if both players find their best tennis, particularly as their games are so different, but it remains to be seen how well the Czech can recover. Vondrousova has other weapons she can turn to if her shoulder limits her serve but Keys can win this battle with gusto if she manages to maintain her level from that hugely impressive win over Pegula. Consistency has rarely been the American’s friend, though, so taking Keys to earn at least a set backed by a partisan atmosphere looks the sensible way to avoid picking an outright winner.
