World number 53 Marketa Vondrousova played well to beat Bianca Andreescu in straight sets on Wednesday, taking their opening tiebreak 7-0 before coming back from a double break down in the second in impressive fashion. The former world number 14 is on a steady path back towards the top 30 on tour after some recent deep runs at Masters events but the former Roland-Garros finalist has yet to really prove herself on grass. World number 120 Jule Niemeier did just that last season with a remarkable run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on her debut. The 23-year-old would be ranked a lot higher had points not been controversially banned at Wimbledon but it has taken her most of this season to find any sort of recognisable level from last summer’s exposure. Niemeier stunned fourth seed Ons Jabeur, the defending champion, in straight sets on Tuesday after scraping through qualifying to look a serious threat to Vondrousova in their first meeting here. Vondrousova is one of the more erratic performers on tour and home advantage will heavily favour her German opponent. Back Niemeier to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
