World number 21 Donna Vekic came back from a set down to win a proper thriller against former world number three Sloane Stephens, continuing her excellent recent form on grass. The 27-year-old finished runner-up to Petra Kvitova at the Berlin Open two weeks ago but wins over Elena Rybakina and Maria Sakkari suggest she will need top 10 opposition to oust her this fortnight. Never count out former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova, though, as the Czech’s lesser-spotted top gear is better than most on tour. The 24-year-old upset 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Thursday to back-up strong results in Berlin over Bianca Andreescu and Jule Niemeier last month and she has enjoyed the deeper run at SW19 as a quarter-finalist here in 2017 to Vekic’s round of 16 run a year later. The winner of this match could be a serious factor in the second week at Wimbledon but back Vekic to earn at least a set with the better recent form to leave the victor up to chance.
