World number 10 Marketa Vondrousova passed a significant test on Wednesday with a straight sets result over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, once again proving herself against the ‘story’ after she ghosted through to the Wimbledon title last month. The 24-year-old is riding a nine-match winning streak into the round of 16, very impressively considering the emotional depressurisation after winning a maiden Grand Slam, and she increasingly looks like a contender at the incoming US Open. World number seven Coco Gauff also brings a winning streak into this encounter after claiming her fourth and most prestigious WTA title in Washington last week. The 19-year-old beat Katie Boulter in comfortable fashion on Wednesday to get her Montreal campaign underway well and she has not dropped a set since bringing in additional coach Brad Gilbert to help ‘rebuild’ her game.
Gauff beat Vondrousova in three sets at the Dubai Tennis Championships two years ago but she will find a totally new prospect this time around. The American should receive the majority of the support but Vondrousova is getting used to playing against the grain.
