Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki was hugely impressive in her first match back on tour since retiring after the 2021 Australian Open, beating qualifier Kimberly Birrell in straight sets. The 33-year-old moved up to world number 629 in one fell swoop in the live rankings and she can move inside the top 500 with another win here, although performances and building back fitness will be her priority at present. After such a kind draw, Wozniacki could not have picked a much harder next opponent if she tried in new Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who beat Mayar Sherif in straight sets on Tuesday to make it eight wins on the spin on tour. The Czech came into Montreal at a career-high WTA world ranking of 10th after her remarkable run to a maiden Grand Slam title last month and, whilst she has been an erratic performer in the past, she looks dialled in to try and maximise this period of form. Wozniacki’s momentum, and likely huge backing by the crowd, makes this a match well worth leaving out of an accumulator but otherwise Vondrousova should be able to take this in two.
