THE PREDICTION

World number 70 Marketa Vondrousova did well to overcome Kaia Kanepi in three sets after the Estonian fought back admirably from a first-set bagel. 23-year-old Vondrousova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 14th after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019 and she should always be considered a creditable threat on clay despite her current deflated ranking. World number 31 Bianca Andreescu should be considered a threat anywhere as a former world number four who won the US Open later that same year but clay is certainly her weakest surface. The 22-year-old has barely played a clay swing since bursting onto the scene in 2019 as she continues to struggle with long injury lay-offs but she reached the quarter-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. This could be the match of the day if both players bring their best but with three sets likely in this first meeting between the two back the more natural clay-courter, Vondrousova, to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
