World number three Jessica Pegula survived an early scare against Martina Trevisan on Wednesday, coming back from a set down to extend her winning streak to six matches after winning the Canada Masters last weekend. The 29-year-old beat world number one Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals of Montreal last Saturday to suggest she is gearing up for a real tilt at the US Open later this month but she will have to break her quarter-finals duck after failing to win a last eight match six times since the start of 2021. World number 35 Marie Bouzkova overcame Elise Mertens in three sets on Wednesday to build on a solid win over Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Masters late last season before defeat to Maria Sakkari, who later lost to Pegula in the American’s first Masters title.
Pegula leads Bouzkova 2-1 in their head-to-head record but the Czech did win their clash at Indian Wells last spring to look dangerous here and two of their three matches have seen sets go both ways. The sensible call is backing Pegula to win outright.
