World number 14 Daria Kasatkina is yet to drop a set this week in Montreal with two reasonably assured victories over Elise Mertens and Anna Blinkova. The 26-year-old has endured a very erratic year on tour but a recent run to the final of the Eastbourne International saw some excellent results before a tight defeat to Madison Keys. World number 37 Marie Bouzkova produced yet another upset over Caroline Garcia on Wednesday, beating the fifth seed in three sets for an odd 4-0 lead in their head-to-head, to look a serious threat here. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Masters late last season to prove her potential at this level and she came closer than most to beating eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon last month. Kasatkina beat Bouzkova in three sets to lift the Philip Island Trophy two years ago and this second tour-level encounter could come as close again. Take the Russian to earn at least a set but leave this head-scratcher out of an accumulator.
