THE PREDICTION
World number eight Maria Sakkari would probably have plenty more WTA titles than her sole Rabat Open trophy from 2019 if semi-finals did not exist. The 27-year-old is one of the fittest, most robust, hard-hitting and intense players on the tour but something seems to happen to her on the cusp of a final, with her defeat to Donna Vekic in Berlin two weeks ago her fifth loss in the last four of a tournament this year alone. The Greek is no better in finals, losing six of her seven so far including a gut-wrenching four last season, and she lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champions of both Roland-Garros and the US Open in 2021 – Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu – to show how close she has been to greatness.
World number 35 Marta Kostyuk is certainly a top 20 player of the future with all the potential to push on even further and the Ukrainian will fancy her chances at the upset here given Sakkari’s recent firs round exit at Roland-Garros. The 21-year-old won her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open back in March and whilst she is still unproven on this surface she did win the Birmingham doubles last week alongside Barbora Krejcikova to get some grass-court tennis in her legs. Sakkari leads Kostyuk 2-0 in their head-to-head but a first meeting on grass should be a fascinating, potentially thrilling battle. Take the Greek to win outright all the same but leave this match well away from any promising accumulators.
