World number 53 Marketa Vondrousova is yet to drop a set this week in Berlin after Jule Niemeier retired late from their match on Thursday. The former world number 14 is making steady progress on her journey back to the top of the sport and she should be able to get back inside the top 30 at least this year based on her performances so far. World number eight Maria Sakkari conceded just three games to Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Thursday to confidently avoid a potential banana skin but the Greek has struggled to beat the better players in recent months, including a loss to Vondrousova at the Italian Open last month in their first meeting on tour. Vondrousova is at her best on clay and Sakkari arguably at her best on hardcourts to suggest the Greek has more of an upper-hand on the faster grass but this could go anywhere between two of the more unpredictable players on tour.
