THE PREDICTION
World number nine Maria Sakkari received a bye to the round of 16 at the Washington Open as the fourth seed this week but the Greek could well have done with a kinder first rounder after her recent form. The 28-year-old was shocked in the first round of Wimbledon by Marta Kostyuk to see her last win on tour come in late June, albeit over Marketa Vondrousova in Berlin who later went on to stun the field at SW19. Back-to-back first round exits at Grand Slams suggest Sakkari’s crisis of confidence is not getting any better despite her occasional bursts of searing tennis on tour but this is a fascinating fixture against Leylah Fernandez who perhaps has the opposite problem. Former world number 13 Fernandez is currently ranked as far back as 88th after struggling to return to form from a foot injury suffered last summer, although she has struggled to find her scintillating best for some time longer. The Canadian is a big-time player you could back to challenge anyone deep in a draw but she can sometimes fail to take the game to an opponent, with her strengths so far in defence as opposed to Sakkari’s more offensive capabilities.
That should make a thriller of both players play their best at the same time in this match but it could just as easily staccato its way to a close. Back Sakkari to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners or consider a one-off on three sets with Fernandez winning three matches already this week in Washington.
