THE PREDICTION
World number nine Maria Sakkari put in an excellent performance to oust home favourite Paula Badosa in straight sets on Monday but it is so hard to confidently back the Greek. The 27-year-old is well capable of beating anyone on her day but there have been too many occasions over the last few years when she has needed to fight back from deficits largely of her own making – particularly in the latter stages of tournaments after impressing early on. World number 35 Irina-Camelia Begu has all the experience required to wait out Sakkari’s storm here and edge through. The 32-year-old is at her best on clay and she has beaten three very tough and different foes this week in straight sets, including 14th seed Liudmila Samsonova and a resurgent Karolina Muchova, to bring confident form into this quarter-final.
Sakkari beat Begu in three tight sets in the semi-final of the St. Petersburg Open last season to lead 2-1 in their head-to-head record but, notably, Begu has earned at least a set in all three of their encounters including a straight-sets first meeting way back in 2016. Take the Romanian to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance or risk the three-set option outside of an accumulator.
