World number eight Maria Sakkari overcame Marketa Vondrousova via a first-set tiebreak and number 23 Donna Vekic turned the screw with a second-set tiebreak to beat Elina Avanesyan on Saturday morning after rain washed out Friday at the Berlin Open. This semi-final will be all about engines and that should seriously favour 27-year-old Sakkari, who is yet to drop a set this week in Berlin as she continues to impress on her weakest surface. 26-year-old Vekic has the upset of the week on her side after she stunned Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina from a set down on Wednesday but the longer this second match of the day goes on the likelier it is that Sakkari’s superior athleticism takes over.
