THE PREDICTION

World number nine Maria Sakkari broke her semi-final losing streak at five on Saturday with a three-set victory over former Washington champion Jessica Pegula. The 28-year-old’s confidence should be boosted to no end after developing a reputation for choking at this stage of an event but she also suffers in finals, with just one title won in Rabat in 2019 to six lost including four last season. World number seven Coco Gauff is yet to drop a set this week after taking on an extra coach to help her rebuild her game and it looks to have worked so far after she ousted defending champion Liudmila Samsonova on Saturday. Sakkari leads Gauff 4-1 in a surprisingly one-sided head-to-head after winning both of their encounters last season and she has, notably, won at least a set in all five of their matches. Back the Greek to earn at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners but Gauff’s finals record is far superior to leave this result a very tight call indeed.
