37-year-old Barbora Strycova beat Maryna Zanevska in three sets on Tuesday to claim her first win since returning from maternity leave. The former world number 16 only came back to the tour, for the first time since January 2021, at the Madrid Open two weeks ago and she looked competitive then in a straight-sets defeat to Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Whilst world number eight Maria Sakkari is caught out more often than she should be it would be a big surprise to see her fail to win this first encounter with the veteran. The narrative sometimes takes hold, though, and the Greek will have to deal with playing a popular underdog in what could prove a thrilling battle on Thursday. 27-year-old Sakkari put in some impressive performances in Madrid before a semi-final exit to Aryna Sabalenka but she did drop sets en-route that make this a tougher call than it should be. Back the Greek to win outright inside an accumulator and in two on its own, although if the latter is the case then a one-off on Strycova to snatch a set here could be the shrewd move.
