THE PREDICTION
World number two Aryna Sabalenka had to dig deep to come back from a set down to Mayar Sherif on Tuesday but the win was ultimately never really in doubt. The 24-year-old won her third of three Masters titles here back in 2021, where the high altitude complements her world class power better than other clay courts on tour. World number nine Maria Sakkari has certainly endured the tougher draw this fortnight but a straight-sets victory over Paula Badosa in the round of 16 was followed by an impressive comeback over Irina-Camelia Begu on Tuesday to suggest the Greek is up for this challenge. 27-year-old Sakkari has put in some quality tennis in Madrid but semi-finals, and indeed finals, are where we really start to see her confidence issues come to the fore.
Sakkari has lost each of her last four semi-finals on tour, including most recently to Sabalenka at Indian Wells just last month. Whilst vengeance will be in her mind it is likely that Sabalenka will win through on mentality more than ability here to extend her lead in their head-to-head, currently 5-3 in her favour. Back the Belarussian to win outright.
