THE PREDICTION
World number 70 Marcos Giron played well to oust Emil Ruusuvuori in two tiebreaks on Tuesday, backing up a solid qualifying campaign in Toronto. The 30-year-old is a strong all-courter but his best results have probably come on hardcourts over the past few seasons, although this looks a step too far against the fifth seed. World number six Holger Rune was known as a clay-court specialist with a promising future this time last season but he suddenly exploded on the indoors hardcourt swing, culminating in beating Novak Djokovic to the Paris Masters title in November. The 20-year-old reached back-to-back quarter-finals at Grand Slams this summer, most recently losing a competitive straight-setter to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, and he should be considered a genuine title threat here, in Cincinnati and the fast-approaching US Open. Giron beat Rune in straight sets at Wimbledon last summer but back the new and improved Dane to do the same to Giron here.
