World number 68 Marcos Giron overcame recent Marrakech Open champion Roberto Carballes Baena in three sets on Monday for a solid start to his Munich Open campaign and he looks the reasonable favourite to come through this first encounter with Alexander Ritschard. Ritschard, however, also provided a reasonable upset in the first round by ousting Monte-Carlo quarter-finalist Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets on Tuesday after barely scraping through the qualifiers.
