25-year-old Magdalena Frech set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 77th this week after enjoying some recent results on the clay swing and the Pole looked strong on grass last summer, reaching the third round of Wimbledon amongst some other decent runs. A three-set victory over home hopeful Sonay Kartal gives Frech a good foothold in Nottingham but world number 39 Lin Zhu grabbed the better result with a straight-sets victory over Alycia Parks on Monday. The 29-year-old set her own career-high of 33rd earlier this year after a stunning run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open gave her the form to win a maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships but she suffered a considerable dip on clay. Back on a faster surface the Chinese looks the slightest of favourites from this tight first tour-level encounter. Back Zhu to win at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
