World number 14 Belinda Bencic and number 24 Magda Linette both battled through three-set thrillers on Thursday, with 26-year-old Bencic coming back from a set down to oust Danielle Collins 10-8 in the deciding tiebreak and 31-year-old Linette overcoming Barbora Strycova in just shy of three hours. Linette reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January to totally change the course of her career in terms or rankings and she looks to have struggled with that larger target on her back ever since. Bencic also enjoyed a huge start to 2023 with her seventh and eighth titles claimed in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi but she seemed to burn out a little until the Charleston Open in April, where she finished runner-up to Ons Jabeur. An injury suffered in that final saw her miss the majority of the clay swing but Bencic is a very capable grass-courter who suddenly looks a factor here at SW19. This is a surprising first encounter between the two but the conditions favour Bencic despite the chance of fatigue after yesterday’s efforts. Back Bencic to win outright.
