World number 18 Madison Keys made it eight wins on the spin on grass, without dropping a set, with a very convincing win over Marta Kostyuk on Saturday. The 28-year-old claimed her seventh WTA title at the Eastbourne International last week, where she won her first in 2014, to bring some interesting form into Wimbledon but she now looks a distinct outsider for the title with one of the most assured streaks of form in the draw. Keys set a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh after finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the US Open in 2017 and she is one win away form matching her best run here in 2015.
MIRRA ANDREEVA
16-year-old Mirra Andreeva was playing in the junior draw at the Australian Open just six months ago but the Russian is now through to the second week of Wimbledon on her debut after an incredible victory over Anastasia Potapova. Andreeva will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 64th for her efforts over the last few months, with May’s remarkable run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Masters now looking like a precursor for a meteoric rise rather than a bursting onto the scene moment.
THE PREDICTION
Madison Keys will need to stay as rock-solid as she has been over the past fortnight against a very dangerous teenager in Mirra Andreeva. The 16-year-old is playing with freedom, expression and a distinct lack of baggage from qualifying through to the last 16 in a similar pattern to the likes of Emma Raducanu at the US Open and Coco Gauff here back in 2019 and that momentum, with the crowd onside, cannot be overestimated. Keys is yet to drop a set in her eight-match winning streak but it will be interesting to see how she copes if she does here. The American is a popular player at Wimbledon but she will probably have to play the villain of the piece in this first meeting with Andreeva. The suitably cautious move is talking Keys to earn at least a set but Andreeva feels like the slightest of favourites here on sheer momentum.
