28-year-old Mackenzie McDonald could be about to enjoy the best run of his career at the US Open to cap off what has been his best on tour as a professional. The American broke the top 40 on tour for the time after an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters three weeks ago and he looked strong in a four-set mini upset over a currently out-of-sorts Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets on Monday. McDonald has already beaten two top 10ers in Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune this month to look a creditable threat to the second week in New York and he will be backed to the hilt as a popular, perennial underdog at home. 25-year-old Borna Gojo qualified well for his US Open debut last week before an assured straight-sets result over Hugo Dellien on Monday. The Croat will break the top 100 on tour for the first time for his efforts and he has shown enough grit whilst representing Croatia at Davis Cup and ATP Cup tournaments these past few years to suggest there could be a real battle here. McDonald is playing well enough to come through in three sets but playing the favourite does not come naturally. Take the American to win outright.
