THE PREDICTION

World number 42 Varvara Gracheva is just two places behind her career-high WTA world ranking after another encouraging season last year in which she reached her first final on tour, finishing runner-up to Marta Kostyuk in Austin. The 23-year-old survived an early scare in Auckland with a comeback win over Tereza Martincova on Tuesday but she should be better in this, on paper, kinder fixture against world number 214 Lulu Sun. However, 22-year-old Sun looks to have found an affinity with the crowd in Auckland and the Swiss, who was born in New Zealand, is considering changing allegiances after enjoying the home support across her three straight-set wins from qualifying through to the round of 16. Gracheva, who herself knows all about that after switching allegiances from Russia to France last summer, will have to play the villain of the piece against an underdog with some momentum here but the eighth seed should be able to edge through.

TIP: VARVARA GRACHEVA TO WIN
