World number seven Ons Jabeur was stunned by Magda Linette on the opening Sunday at Roland-Garros last summer but the Tunisian reacted well to the disappointment to finish runner-up at both Wimbledon and the US Open. The 28-year-old comes in to Paris with plenty of concerns surrounding her fitness after suffering an injury at the Stuttgart Open last month but she claimed her fifth WTA title at the Charleston Open in a brief window of health earlier in April. This looks a really tricky opener for Jabeur, who will be backed to the hilt as a popular player on tour, as she faces world number 64 Lucia Bronzetti for the first time fresh from the Italian’s maiden WTA title won at the Rabat Open. 24-year-old Bronzetti snapped a concerning 10-match losing streak last week and then did not look back, ousting in-form Julia Grabher in three sets in the final to back-up solid results over Sloane Stephens and Alycia Parks.
A five-match winning streak makes taking Bronzetti to earn at least a set here looks the sensible move but Jabeur is a tough player to meet for the first time and it could be worth leaving this match alone altogether until we gauge the seventh seed’s fitness.
