THE PREDICTION
Former world number 10 Lucas Pouille is providing one of the feelgood stories of Roland-Garros so far after overcoming recent struggles with mental health and alcoholism to make the second round in Paris. The Frenchman is currently ranked just inside the top 700 on tour after spending several years in the wilderness but he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open as recently as 2019 and there is plenty of time to recover at 29 years old. World number 13 Cam Norrie will have to play the villain of the piece for a second match running after overcoming French maverick Benoit Paire in five difficult sets on Monday. The 27-year-old did well to play the game and not the occasion against the former world number 18 but this could be a tougher challenge against an inspiring home hopeful, and less a cult hero, with their head-to-head record looking finely poised.
Pouille won their first encounter in four sets here back in 2018 but Norrie returned the favour, also in four, at Wimbledon two years ago. Whilst home advantage is behind Pouille, the Frenchman has only ever reached the third round on two previous occasions on what is probably his weakest surface and that makes backing Norrie to edge through here the sensible, if unsentimental, call.
