18-year-old Luca Van Assche set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 85th this week after some recent success on clay on and off the tour. The Frenchman is approaching rising star status after claiming tow Challenger titles earlier this season and he is a tough draw for anyone on clay right now as a former junior Roland-Garros champion. The youngest player in the top 100 will face world number 61 Tomas Martin Etcheverry for the first time in what should prove a lengthy battle as the Argentine is something of a ball-machine on his favoured clay. 23-year-old Etcheverry recently reached his first tour final at the Houston Open before defeat to Frances Tiafoe but he has won his first match in each of his last four tournaments to look the more dependable here. Van Assche will love the atmosphere here in Rome but it is Etcheverry’s first time here too and he has proven a thorn in the side of most players faced this season.
