THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Luca Nardi received a wildcard to the main draw of the Italian Open last season before a straight-sets defeat to Cam Norrie but he fares a much better chance this time around. The organisers have granted the current world number 156 another wildcard this year despite him struggling on and off the tour in 2023 but world number 107 David Goffin is a very upset-able sleeping giant right now. Former world number seven Goffin brings a concerning 5-8 record into the Italian Open despite some strong performances at Challenger level this season and that suggests his form on tour is more of a mental blockage than in his ability. The Belgian has clearly been struggling for a few seasons now but he still added titles to his name in the past two seasons to remain a dangerous name to draw. If Nardi had any sort of form to his name this would be a backable upset to follow but despite home advantage favouring the Italian it is likeliest that Goffin finds a way through. Leave this one well away from an accumulator.
