THE PREDICTION
This could be a thrilling first meeting between world number 32 Yoshihito Nishioka and number 48 Lorenzo Sonego, the latter of whom knows how to use the home crowd in Rome. The 28-year-old conceded just three games to Jeremy Chardy on Thursday but he will face a much steeper challenge against Nishioka, whose disruptive and unorthodox lefty style is always hard to decipher the first time around. 27-year-old Nishioka took a set from Jannik Sinner at the Barcelona Open last month and similar conditions in Rome should aid him against some of Sonego’s raspier balls. Sonego is capable of much better than his current ranking suggests and he proved that here two years ago when he took Novak Djokovic to three sets before defeat in the semi-finals.
