THE PREDICTION
World number 40 Ugo Humbert conceded just seven games to Adrian Mannarino to continue a really encouraging stretch of form on clay. The 24-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 25th early last season based on some excellent results in previous years but he contracted covid-19 at the Australian Open and never fully recovered his level until, perhaps, this summer. Back-to-back Challenger titles on clay in recent weeks have repaired his ranking but playing to a high level in front of desperate home fans in Paris should do wonders for his damaged confidence and this looks a proper thriller on Wednesday against world number 48 Lorenzo Sonego. 28-year-old Sonego is also better than his current deflated ranking suggests and a four-set victory over 30th seed Ben Shelton is an excellent start to any Grand Slam, particularly here as the Italian will face a second-successive left-hander with some rare match practice behind him.
Sonego beat Humbert in three sets on clay last month at the Monte-Carlo Masters but Humbert won their first encounter in straight sets at the Canada Masters on a hardcourt. This match looks a reasonable candidate for five sets but the suitably cautious move would be backing Humbert to win at least one of them, as he has in each of their two previous meetings.
