THE PREDICTION
World number 65 Jan-Lennard Struff was upset in qualifying by Aslan Karatsev but handed a second chance as a lucky loser. The 33-year-old will be eager to make the most of it after a strong recent run to the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters pulled him back up to a more respectable ATP ranking but this looks a tough, and likely thrilling, encounter with world number 47 Lorenzo Sonego. There are some similarities between the two players as 27-year-old Sonego has also struggled to for consistent performances befitting his quality on tour but the Italian has won five of his last eight matches on tour in a welcome sign of improvement and he too favours clay. Sonego beat Struff in straight sets at the Stuttgart Open on grass last summer but the playing field will be levelled here in Madrid and those qualifying matches, and better recent clay form, probably hand the German an edge in these conditions. Back Struff to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
