World number 19 Lorenzo Musetti lost to Laslo Djere in straight sets to see his defence of the Hamburg Open quashed in the quarter-finals two weeks ago, his last chance at a title on his favoured clay this season. The 21-year-old claimed his second ATP title on an indoor hardcourt in Florence late last season but he certainly has plenty left to improve on the surface, with some encouraging gains made on grass this summer. World number 45 Yoshihito Nishioka finished runner-up to Nick Kyrgios at the Washington Open this time last season at the start of a run with the best form of his career but the Japanese lost from a set up to Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round last week. The 27-year-old takes a four-match losing streak into the first round in Toronto but he remains a player with a surprisingly high ceiling when he finds his rhythm, particularly against the hotter heads on tour. The pair share a 1-1 head-o-head record with a win apiece on clay but back Nishioka to earn at least a set here as the more comfortable in these conditions.
