THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Thiago Seyboth Wild will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 62nd after beating Roman Safiullin in straight sets on Wednesday. The Brazilian was a hotly-touted junior star but it has taken much longer than expected to see him become a mainstay on the ATP tour, although his progress was hampered more than most by the covid-19 pandemic.
This should be a fascinating first encounter with fellow clay-court lover Lorenzo Musetti as the Italian continues to fluctuate between purple patches and poor form on tour. The world number 29 made the round of 16 for a second time at Roland-Garros last summer to prove his credentials as one of the most natural clay-courters around but a straight-sets exit to Roberto Carballes Baena in Barcelona last time out contrasts concerningly with a brilliant run to the last 16 in Monte-Carlo the week before. Seyboth Wild has the benefit of a run-up here in Madrid and the better overall form so back the Brazilian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
