World number 19 Lorenzo Musetti conceded just five games to Yoshihito Nishioka on Monday to start impressively in Montreal. The Italian is one of the best clay-courters on tour but he won the Firenze Open on an indoor hardcourt late last season to prove himself more than just a one-surface specialist. World number 86 Thanasi Kokkinakis is at his best in these conditions and the Aussie looked encouragingly solid in a straight-sets victory over in-form Zhizhen Zhang. The 26-year-old is capable of breaking the top 40 with ease if he could maintain his best level consistently but there have been too many odd exits this season after some promising signs early on. A first meeting between the two should be a thrilling clash of styles but this is a one of the more difficult calls of the day between form and surface. Back Kokkinakis to earn at least a set as the more comfortable in these conditions but leave this match well away from any accumulators.
