World number 21 Lorenzo Musetti provided one of the shocks of the season so far in a comeback victory over Novak Djokovic on Thursday. The win will feel all the more special as some closure for their first encounter in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros two years ago, where Musetti took the first two sets before running out of steam and eventually retiring from the fifth. The 21-year-old suffered a huge confidence drop for the rest of the season after that and he only really regained it last summer to see him claim his maiden ATP title at Carlos Alcaraz’ expense at the Hamburg Open and that is how good he can be when his self-belief is high. That makes this a very difficult challenge for fellow Italian Jannik Sinner, also 21, despite his 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record. World number eight Sinner came back from a set down to beat Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday to continue in strong form that saw him finish runner-up to Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open two weeks ago, with a victory of his own over Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
Much of this match rests on what the win over Djokovic does for Musetti in the short term, with the long term effects to his confidence likely to be hugely beneficial. It could be that Musetti put everything he had into a statement victory and that Sinner can edge past him on fitness here, so backing Sinner to earn at least a set looks the suitably cautious move.
