21-year-old Lorenzo Musetti came into Roland-Garros at a career-high ATP world ranking of 18th after a solid run to the round of 16 at the Italian Open earlier this month. The Italian famously took the first two sets from Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 here two years ago before quickly running out of steam but he is well capable of emulating that run or even bettering it here as one of the most natural clay-courters on tour. At the peak of his powers Musetti won the Hamburg 500 last summer at Carlos Alcaraz’ expense and the pair could meet for a potential thriller in the round of 16 this fortnight if results go their way. Underestimate 22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko at your peril, though, as the Russian claimed his maiden Grand Slam victory on Sunday in four sets over Oscar Otte. The world number 87 recently produced a stunning run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open, taking the first set from Daniil Medvedev before defeat, and he took Jannik Sinner to three in Rome earlier this month to look a serious threat on clay.
The conditions, and crowd, are likely to favour Musetti more in this first meeting between the two but the suitably cautious pick would be backing the Italian to earn at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable winners.
