World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova reached the round of 16 here last summer before defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic in form that saw her win three WTA titles in as many months on hardcourts. The Russian endured a tough first half to 2023 but she has more recently found some significant form on her favoured surface, finishing runner-up to Jessica Pegula in her first Masters final in Montreal earlier this month after stunning both Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. A straight-sets victory over Claire Liu was a solid start to her campaign in New York and next opponent Tamara Korpatsch should fall in similar fashion. The 28-year-old beat Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets to maintain a recent upturn in form but there should be a noticeable gulf in quality at this level here. Back Samsonova to win in two.
