THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova is the defending champion at the Washington Open but she had struggled with her form for much of the summer to look a potential early upset in the first round. However, a straight-sets victory over Danielle Collins is an excellent way to begin a title defence on a US hardcourt and the Russian looks the more comfortable performer in these conditions against Sorana Cirstea in this first encounter despite Cirstea’s results this year. The 33-year-old burst into form on the Sunshine Double, beating the likes of Karolina Muchova and Aryna Sabalenka before defeat in the semi-finals of Miami to eventual champion Petra Kvitova. World number 32 Cirstea overcame Petra Martic with an impressive 15-13 tiebreak in the second to look a solid competitor here but if both find their best level Samsonova remains the favourite. Take the Russian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
